The WWF calls for a realignment of the global food system to the natural limits of the earth’s stress. According to a study, 30 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions caused by food production could be saved and species extinction could be greatly reduced, according to WWF Austria today on the occasion of World Food Day on October 16.

Politicians must „take their responsibility for a healthy food system much more seriously, instead of just outsourcing it to the people,“ said Hannah-Heidi Schindler, program manager for sustainable nutrition at WWF Austria.
Criticism of high meat consumption in industrialized countries

The required measures range from greater protection of biological diversity in agriculture to more nature-based climate protection solutions to curbing rapid soil consumption.

A reduction in meat consumption, which is much too high, especially in industrialized countries, would have particularly great advantages. In Austria, too, people still eat well above what is ecologically and health-wise acceptable, according to the WWF.

Caritas emphasized that it was particularly urgent to draw attention to hunger this year. According to the United Nations World Food Organization (FAO), the CoV crisis could increase the number of people suffering from hunger worldwide by up to 132 million.

The aid organization CARE warned of a worsening hunger crisis in Yemen. After almost six years of war, the economy is in ruins and 20 million people, two thirds of the population, have too little food. „Worldwide 820 million people are starving, around 60 percent are women and girls“, criticized Petra Bayr, SPÖ area spokeswoman for global development, also on the occasion of the International Day of Women in Rural areas on October 15th.
