Two policemen have been arrested a year after the murder of leftist local politician Marielle Franco in Brazil. The two members of the Brazilian military police are suspected of having perpetrated the attack in March 2018, the news website G1 reported, citing the judiciary.
One of the two is said to have delivered on 14 March in Rio, the fatal shots on Franco and its driver. The other should have controlled the vehicle of the alleged perpetrators. According to the investigators, the murder of the black local politician was planned for three months minutely.
The 38-year-old Franco sat on the city council for the left-wing Socialist and Freedom Party (PSOL), campaigning for blacks‘ rights in Brazil, and sharply criticizing police action in the slums of the city. Her assassination shocked the Brazilians and triggered a wave of protests against increasing violence in Rio de Janeiro.
