The reason is that more people are then in closed rooms instead of outside, said a WHO spokeswoman for the dpa. However, it is impossible to predict whether and when there will be a new increase in infections or a second wave in which countries.
„We know that the virus spreads less effectively outdoors than in closed rooms, that well-ventilated rooms pose less risk than poorly-ventilated rooms, and that keeping a distance also plays a role,“ said the spokeswoman. „Environmental conditions such as air humidity, temperatures and UV radiation are also likely to play a limited role.“
However, the actual transmission rates depended on the behavior of the people and the protective measures in place in order to reduce the risk of Covid-19 and other respiratory diseases that spread in colder months. It may be necessary to temporarily impose measures that have already been lifted.
