According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the risk of new coronavirus infections increases when the vacation period ends and it gets cooler. The reason is that more people are then in closed rooms instead of outside, said a WHO spokeswoman for the dpa. However, it is impossible to predict whether and when there will be a new increase in infections or a second wave in which countries.
„We know that the virus spreads less effectively outdoors than in closed rooms, that well-ventilated rooms pose less risk than poorly-ventilated rooms, and that keeping a distance also plays a role,“ said the spokeswoman. „Environmental conditions such as air humidity, temperatures and UV radiation are also likely to play a limited role.“
However, the actual transmission rates depended on the behavior of the people and the protective measures in place in order to reduce the risk of Covid-19 and other respiratory diseases that spread in colder months. It may be necessary to temporarily impose measures that have already been lifted.
