Despite the easing of tension in Europe, the coronavirus pandemic is far from over. On the contrary. „The pandemic is accelerating,“ said World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in Geneva today. In one day, more than 150,000 new infections were reported to the WHO, more than ever before. Almost half were reported from North, Central and South America, but larger numbers also came from South Asia and the Middle East.
„The world is in a new and dangerous phase,“ said Tedros. “Many people understandably are fed up with being at home. Countries understandably want to reopen the economy and society. But the virus is spreading fast, it’s still deadly, and most people can still get infected. ”
Tedros urged all people to keep their distance and wash their hands frequently and to implement other hygiene measures. All infections would have to be tracked down and those affected isolated.
