According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the African continent could have left the peak of the pandemic behind. It can be seen that „something of a climax“ has been reached, and the new case numbers reported daily in the region are now falling, said the WHO Regional Director for Africa, Matshidiso Moeti, at a video conference of African health ministers yesterday.

Increasing numbers in some countries

However, there are a few African countries, such as Namibia, where the number of new infections every day is currently increasing. A total of almost 1.2 million cases of infection were counted in Africa. According to a count by the AFP news agency, at least 28,000 people have died as a result of the infection in Africa since the first case of infection with the novel corona virus became known there on February 14.

More than half of coronavirus infections on the continent have been recorded in South Africa, which is the fifth most affected country in the world. There, too, the number of infections and deaths is falling.

„Our main concern is whether this is the first wave and whether there could be another,“ said South African Health Minister Zweli Mkhize. „We have passed our apex, our wave, but if you look to Spain, after a long break, there has been an increase.“
