In the east of Russia, a volcano has ejected a ten-kilometer ash column. This could affect air traffic, said the volcanologists of the Russian research group KVERT today. The ash column at the volcano Schiwelutsch on the Kamchatka Peninsula on the Pacific could reach a height of up to 15 kilometers in further eruptions.

The volcano is 3,283 meters high. Again and again the research finds activities there. The 1,200 kilometer long and up to 450 kilometer wide peninsula has about 160 volcanoes, but only about two dozen of them are active. The volcanic region is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The ashes from the Schiwelutsch had been blown up several hundred kilometers to the Bering Strait off Alaska, it was said. The next settlement is about 50 kilometers away. According to the civil defense, there is no danger to the inhabitants.
