In the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, the virologist Hendrik Streeck is campaigning for a new classification of the much-noticed infection numbers. „When assessing the situation, we must not limit ourselves to the pure numbers of infections,“ said the doctor from the University of Bonn.
The number of people who tested positive in Germany and Europe is increasing significantly, but at the same time there is hardly any increase in the number of deaths, according to Streeck.
Streeck: prevent infections
Yesterday, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported 948 new infections in Germany, which means that the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases has increased to 259,428. The number of deaths rose by two to 9,349, said the RKI.
Streeck further explained in the “Welt am Sonntag” that, in principle, infections should be prevented as much as possible. At the same time, however, the following applies: „From a social point of view, infections with no symptoms are not necessarily bad.“
The more people become infected and do not develop symptoms, the more they are immune – at least for a short period of time. „We can’t let life pause.“ Nobody – no politician, no virologist, no epidemiologist – knows the one correct way to deal with the pandemic. „We can only try things out, and we also have to be able to make mistakes.“
