US President Donald Trump wants Mexican drug cartels according to a media report classified as foreign terrorist organizations. The official classification by the US government is a complicated process, but there is good progress, Trump was quoted by conservative radio host Bill O’Reilly.
According to O’Reilly, the president said in an interview regarding the number of drug-related deaths in the US, „We lose 100,000 people every year because of what’s happening in Mexico and what’s happening in Mexico.“
Mexico rejects projects
The classification as a global terrorist organization, which so far, for example, jihadist groups such as al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (IS), could open up additional possibilities for the US government in the fight against the groups.
Mexico’s Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard had rejected such a step by the US government on Monday because under US law it would then be possible to take direct action in Mexico. „Of course, Mexico can never accept that,“ he said.
Massacre of Mormons
Alleged members of a drug cartel had attacked a Mormon extended family of American origin in early November on a rural road in northern Mexico. They shot six children between the ages of eight months and eleven and three women. Other children were injured.
Secretary of State Ebrard said that there had been significant progress in clarifying the facts, but that they would not be divulged in consultation with the US, so as not to jeopardize the investigation. These are a good example of cooperation between the two countries.
