The US is bothering with Turkey’s armaments plans and is now resorting to sanctions. For the time being, no parts for the F-35 fighter jet to be delivered to the NATO partner, said the US Department of Defense. Unless the Turkish government renounces the Russian S-400 air defense system, deliveries and activities surrounding the F-35 jets would be suspended.
Unusual deal for NATO member
The US and other NATO countries are concerned that Russia could obtain information on NATO aircraft through the missile defense system. They are afraid that with a combination of weapon systems the radar of the Russian missiles in Turkey will learn to detect and track the US jet. There is also doubt that the Russian system is compatible with Western technology.
The purchase of a Russian weapon system is extremely unusual for a NATO member. In the West, there is growing concern that Turkey is turning its back on the Alliance. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wants to hold on to the purchase despite criticism from his allies.
Pentagon seeks replacement
Ankara is not only a customer but also a partner in the F35 jets. In Turkey, components for the chassis, fuselage and cockpit are being built on behalf of Lockheed Martin. The Pentagon explained that it is looking for new manufacturers for the aircraft parts developed in Turkey. „We regret the current situation very much,“ it said in a statement. However, the Ministry of Defense must protect joint investment in key technologies.
Turkey wanted to buy 100 fighter jets and has already sent pilots for training in the US. According to the manufacturer Lockheed Martin, the contracts with Turkish suppliers amounted to 10.7 billion euros.
On Wednesday, NATO foreign ministers will meet in Washington. Then the armaments deal of Turkey should come up.
