Another peak meeting between representatives of the US government and Democratic congressmen yesterday brought no breakthrough in the budget dispute. US Vice President Mike Pence spoke only after the meeting of a constructive meeting. It was agreed to reassemble today.

Pence said in a statement that he had reaffirmed to the Democratic congressmen the position of President Donald Trump that there had to be financing for the border wall with Mexico.

The Democrats said they were trying to make it clear that there could not be agreement on the question of wall financing as long as the budget freeze remained in force.

Trump: months or years shutdown

Trump himself, after consulting the Democrats‘ congressional leaders on Friday, said he was prepared to keep the budget freeze for months or even years if his demands were not met. Nor had he ruled out calling for a national emergency in order to build the wall he had promised in the campaign on the border with Mexico. He would not end the so-called Government Shutdown until the border problem was solved.
