US refugee camp: Human Rights Commissioner „shocked“UN Human Rights Commissioner Michelle Bachelet has today „deeply shocked“ the conditions in the controversial refugee camps in the US. Human rights organizations, doctors and lawyers complain of overcrowding and poor hygiene in the camps. US President Donald Trump announced in the face of widespread criticism, media access to the facilities to grant.

Ministry reports overcrowding

A report from the US Department of Homeland Security last week warned of „dangerous overcrowding“ in several detention centers. Congressmen of the opposition Democrats also told of visits to such facilities from completely overcrowded cells without running water, where children and adults were denied access to medicines and could not shower for weeks.

As a pediatrician, mother, and former head of state, she is appalled that „children are forced to sleep on crowded places without access to adequate health care or food, and poor sanitation,“ said Bachelet. The former president of Chile warned that even if children were held only briefly and in good conditions, this could have „serious consequences for their health and development“.

Trump finds „newspaper pens“

The „New York Times“ reported Saturday on a border guard station in Clint, Texas. There, hundreds of children in dirty clothes would crowd into disease-infested cells. The stink was so strong that it is transferred to the clothes of the border guards, the children would cry constantly, it said in the article.

President Trump called the reports „newspaper pens,“ but admitted overcrowding and announced that some of the camps were open to journalists. „We’re going to let some parts of the press in because they are overcrowded, and we were the ones who complained about overcrowding,“ Trump told journalists in Morristown, New Jersey. „I want the press to go in and see them.“
