US President Donald Trump gets his own party competition for a second term in the White House. Former East Coast Governor Massachusetts Bill Weld announced yesterday that he would be campaigning for the Republican presidential nomination. „America has the choice,“ reads a video published on the social media. „A better America starts here.“
The roughly two-minute video highlights Weld’s achievements during his time as Massachusetts governor in the 1990s. At the same time, the video takes me hard Trump to court: It discusses, inter alia, earlier misogynist statements Trump and his unfulfilled campaign promise, Mexico will pay for the construction of a border wall.
Trump still popular with Republicans
Weld, who described Trump as a „schoolyard bullies,“ relies on the dissatisfaction of some Republicans with the political course, the appearance and many statements of the President. However, the ex-governor has little chance of success – at the Republican base, Trump continues to enjoy great popularity.
Weld was Governor of Massachusetts from 1991 to 1997. Later, he moved from the Republicans to the Libertarian Party, for which he ran in 2016 as a vice presidential candidate. Only in February Weld returned to the Republicans.
