MEPs in the US Congress have pressing questions following the death of US businessman Jeffrey Epstein in his prison cell in New York, charged with sexual abuse. The leading members of the Judiciary Committee in the House of Representatives yesterday (local time) wrote to the federal prisons authority and asked for clarification.

23 questions and serious allegations

The letter lists 23 questions – including the general treatment of mentally unstable prisoners in the detention center concerned, as well as the exact procedures in Epstein’s case shortly before his death. The chairman of the committee, Democrat Jerry Nadler, and the leading Republican on the panel, Doug Collins, complained in the letter that the case revealed grave omissions in dealing with detainees. They requested answers to their questions by 21 August.

Epstein had been found dead by staff at the detention center over the weekend. US Attorney William Barr deplored „serious irregularities“ and announced a thorough investigation into the case. The 66-year-old businessman was accused by the Procuratorate in New York to have abused dozens of underage girls.
