She had fooled New York high society with lies and fake documents-and betrayed tens of thousands of dollars. Now impostor Anna Sorokin is up to twelve years behind bars.
The German impostor Anna Sorokin has been sentenced in New York to a prison sentence of four to twelve years. This was reported by the highest court in the state of New York.
She was convicted for stealing more than $ 200,000 worth of benefits in the high society of Manhattan (around € 180,000).
„Amazing scams“
The court also ordered Sorokin to pay back nearly $ 200,000 to injured parties. In addition comes a fine of 24,000 dollars (more than 21,000 euros).
The scams of the 28-year-olds are amazing, said Judge Dian Kiesel. Previously, the alleged heir to a fortune had been convicted in April in three cases of theft, in four cases of culling services, and in one case of attempted serious theft.
Mixed among Manhattan’s fancy
The case had caused a stir internationally. According to the indictment, Sorokin had mixed with Manhattan’s fancy in 2016 and 2017 under the pseudonym Anna Delvey. In doing so, she presented herself as a rich million heir with trust funds in the back and quickly gained the trust of affluent acquaintances.
Originally, the woman comes from Russia, at the age of 16 years she moved to Germany, where she went to school in Eschweiler near Aachen. Sorokin reportedly used her self-assured demeanor on lies and fake documents to fool her new acquaintances, as well as hotels, restaurants, and banks in droves. The prosecution spoke during the trial of a „calculated system to give their victims a sense of security“.
The sentence means that Sorokin can come out of jail on probation at the earliest after four years. A panel will decide. Sorokin should be expelled to Germany as soon as she is released from prison because her visa expired.
