Just 75 years after the founding of the UN, the annual meeting of heads of state and government from around the world in New York is expected to be canceled.
Given the coronavirus pandemic, he considered it “unlikely” that the meeting could take place in September for the general debate of the UN General Assembly, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said in an interview with the French weekly newspaper “Paris Match”.
Video conference instead of meetings
He is currently examining various options for „digital technology“ so that the state and government leaders can still confer with one another, said Guterres. Ambassadors to the United Nations expect that there will be a video conference.
The work of the UN has been severely restricted by the pandemic since mid-March. The officials of the World Organization work from home, and diplomatic staff also stay away from the UN headquarters on the East River. The meetings of the General Assembly and the Security Council take place via video conference.
