Almost four months after the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Istanbul Consulate, a UN rapporteur begins investigations today in Turkey. According to the UN Human Rights Office, Agnes Callamard wants to gather information about the circumstances surrounding the murder by 3 February.

A Saudi killing squad had murdered the government-critical journalist Khashoggi in early October in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. The exiled Washington Post columnist wanted to pick up documents for his wedding.

The government in Riyadh admitted death only after international pressure, and since January, eleven suspects are in court in Riyadh. Callamard is Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Punitive and Arbitrary Executions. She initiated the investigation herself and reports to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
