The Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok has survived an attempted assassination attempt, according to government officials. State television reported today that there had been an attack on his convoy in the capital, Khartoum.
The state news agency SUNA reported that Hamdok is doing well. He was in a safe place after his convoy was attempted an attack in Khartoum in the morning. According to eyewitnesses, several vehicles were damaged in the explosion. It is still unknown whether there were deaths or injuries. The background to the attack is also unclear.
Sudan had been ruled hard by Omar Hassan al-Bashir for almost 30 years. The long-term ruler was driven out of office in April last year by mass protests and a military coup. In July, the military and civil opposition agreed on a transitional government to pave the way for elections within three years.
