Around three and a half years after the attempted coup in Turkey, the government continues to search intensely for alleged co-conspirators. Prosecutors have found at least 207 people in dozens of cities today, the state news agency Anadolu Ajansi reported. At least 137 of them were detained in the morning.
Connections to the movement around the Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen are accused of being sought, as Anadolu further reported. The government blames Gülen for the coup attempt in 2016.
The vast majority of those searched were soldiers again – including Anadolu, including six pilots for F-16 fighters. The government also accuses Gülen of deliberately infiltrating state institutions such as the army. According to the Ministry of Defense, more than 18,600 members of the armed forces have been removed from the post since the coup attempt.
Anadolu usually reports several new searches and arrests every week.
