In the budget dispute in the United States, President Donald Trump does not see the provisional agreement of Republican and Democrat negotiators as the only source of funding for his planned construction of a border wall with Mexico. Senator Richard Shelby, the Republicans‘ leading Republican negotiator, presented the details of the agreement to him, Trump wrote on Twitter last night.
He looks at all aspects in the knowledge that even „lots of money from other sources“ is added. You’ll get close to $ 23 billion for border security, Trump wrote in another tweet – but without giving any details on how he gets that amount. Regardless of the funds for the wall, these are already being built, he added.
Trump not happy with agreement
On Monday evening (local time), a cross-party negotiating team had announced that they had found a compromise proposal to settle the dispute over the financing of a border wall. The contents were initially not officially known.
US media reported that the agreement included 1,375 billion dollars (1.216 billion euros) for additional border fortifications. This is much less than Trump’s call for $ 5.7 billion to build a wall.
Trump had said after that he was not happy with the agreement of the negotiators. At the same time, he suggested that he could collect money for the border from other ministries and, in case of doubt, also declare a „national emergency“ in order to promote the construction of the wall.
The controversy over the construction of the Wall and its financing had led to the longest „shutdown“ in US history at the turn of the year – a partial stalemate over 35 days. Until Friday, an agreement must be reached in the dispute, otherwise it could come to a new „shutdown“.
