According to a newspaper report, US President Donald Trump wants to buy Greenland for the US. Trump asked consultants whether the United States could buy the largest island in the world, the Wall Street Journal reported yesterday.

The president is interested in Greenland’s northeastern Canada because of its natural resources and geo-strategic importance. According to the Wall Street Journal, some Trump consultants considered it worthwhile buying the island, while others felt a „fleeting fascination“ with the president.

Greenland belongs to Denmark as an autonomous area. On the two million square kilometer island live only scarcely 57,000 humans, most of them are Inuit. 85 percent of the land mass is covered with miles of ice.

„He went crazy““

It must be an April joke,“ responded former Prime Minister Lars Lökke Rasmussen. „If he really takes that into account, then that’s the last proof that he’s gone crazy,“ said foreign affairs spokesman for the right-wing Danish People’s Party, Sören Espersen, in a conversation with DR. „The idea that Denmark has 50,000 citizens sold to the United States is completely ridiculous.

„“I’m sure a majority in Greenland believes it’s better to have a relationship with Denmark over the long term than with the United States,“ said Aaja Chemnitz Larsen, Danish MP of Greenland’s second largest party, Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA), the news agency Reuters. Martin Lidegaard of the Social Liberal Party and former Foreign Minister spoke of a „grotesque proposal“. „We’re talking about real people, and you can not just sell Greenland like an old colonial power,“ he told Reuters.

North Korea’s „great beaches“

This is not the first time that the US President has been interested in property abroad. In the past, he said, among other things, the „great beaches“ of North Korea would be an ideal location for vacation rentals.
