Trudeau dismisses Canadian ambassador in China

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has fired his ambassador to China, John McCallum. He asked McCallum for his resignation and accepted, said Trudeau yesterday. Details did not make the Prime Minister.

McCallum has been causing a stir in recent days with comments on the case of Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou, who was arrested in Canada. Among other things, the ambassador said that the extradition request from the US was buggy. Later, he said it would be „good for Canada“ if the US dropped the extradition request.

Meng was arrested in early December in Canada at the instigation of the United States. The US Justice accuses her of violating Iran sanctions and demands her extradition. Although Meng is now on bail, the procedure for their extradition to the US is still running.
