Thailand has weathered the tropical storm „Pabuk“ without the feared bad damage. The storm took off with heavy gusts and heavy rain over several tourist islands like Koh Samui. In contrast to the first fears, however, the effects were limited. In some places, trees were uprooted and roofs covered. There were also floods.
Koh Samui airport open again
Today, the Thai weather authorities officially resumed their storm warning. „Pabuk“ is now only a tropical depression. The airport of Koh Samui resumed its operation. Also, the ferries, which many holidaymakers are dependent on, should run again during the weekend. Because of the storm yesterday afternoon, the power had been lost on the island for hours.
The weather front now moves with heavy rains to the west. In total, nearly 30,000 people had to leave their accommodation in southern Thailand since last week. The authorities had initially expected the worst. At first it was feared that „Pabuk“ could become as destructive as the tropical storm „Harriet“ in 1962. At that time, nearly a thousand people were killed in Thailand.
