According to the Australian government, three people have been arrested in Iran. The Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade looks after the families of the three concerned consular, said today a spokesman for the news agency AFP. For privacy reasons, he did not want to give details.

The London Times reported earlier that two women of British and Australian nationality were detained at Ewin Prison in Tehran. According to the Australian broadcaster ABC, the Australian friend of one of the women was also arrested. So far it is unclear whether there is already an indictment. One of the women is said to have been in custody for up to a year.

Australia participates in the US-led naval mission to protect shipping in the Strait of Hormuz between Iran and Oman. Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced in August that he would provide a frigate, a reconnaissance plane and military personnel to support the mission.

Iran had last repeatedly stated tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. In addition, several tankers were attacked in the region, for which Washington was also responsible Tehran. The tensions developed in connection with the dispute over the nuclear agreement with Iran, from which the United States left in May 2018.
