In Denmark, three people died in connection with the discovery of salmonella in a natural remedy. The Danish health institute SSI announced this evening. A total of 33 people between the ages of two and 92 have been shown to have salmonella, 19 have so far been hospitalized. The same type of salmonella was found in all of them, which was discovered in the psyllium husks to be taken in capsules.
SSI epidemiologist Luise Müller explained that it was a serious and large outbreak with many sick people as well as hospital stays and deaths. For the first time it was possible to identify a natural remedy as the cause of a salmonella outbreak. At the same time, her institute made it clear that the risk of contracting salmonella is considered to be low if you have consumed the product or another dietary supplement from the manufacturer. Most of the time, the symptoms of salmonella are mild and go away on their own.
According to the manufacturer, the product is said to help digestion and various stomach problems. Several products have already been recalled by the manufacturer. Müller told the Ritzau news agency that if you see a high proportion of deaths in the outbreak, it is because the product is taken, among other things, by people who are already sick in advance. In all three deaths, something else was missing. It is therefore difficult to say whether they died of or with salmonella.
