In Argentina, thousands of people took to the streets for food aid in the coronavirus crisis. They gathered in front of the government seat in Buenos Aires and held up posters that said, „End your hunger“.
The motto of the demonstration, which social organizations had called for, was “el polentazo”. Polenta made from corn grits is one of the staple foods in Argentina that more and more people can hardly afford.
Two million infected
In Argentina, around two million people have been shown to have contracted the corona virus, and around 54,000 people died. Health experts are currently warning of a second wave of infections.
Argentina was already in a deep financial and economic crisis before the pandemic. Unemployment is now over ten percent, and more than 40 percent of the 44 million inhabitants are affected by poverty. Inflation was almost eight percent in January and February.
