In France, thousands met at several illegal parties at the turn of the year. At an event south of the Breton city of Rennes, around 2,500 people were present, as the French news agency AFP reported today, citing the department of Ille-et-Vilaine. The celebrants had come from other French departments and even from abroad.

Gendarmes secured the area around the party in Lieuron, as AFP reported. Disinfectants and masks were distributed to minimize the risk of the coronavirus spreading. The public prosecutor’s office has initiated investigations into the case.
Strict contact restrictions

Also in Marseille and Seine-et-Marne around 300 and 100 people celebrated the New Year. Security forces would have broken up the celebrations. The channel Franceinfo also reported on a planned New Year’s party with 190 guests in Normandy.

Due to the CoV pandemic, close contact restrictions apply in France. According to a government recommendation, no more than six adults should meet at home on New Year’s Eve. A night curfew also prohibits leaving the house between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. without a valid reason.
