Thousands are calling for the government in Bulgaria to resign

Once again, thousands of people took to the streets in Bulgaria to demand the resignation of the government. The demonstrators marched through the capital Sofia yesterday evening shouting slogans such as “Stand back!” And “Mafia”.

For three months there have been regular demonstrations in Bulgaria against the government of Prime Minister Boris Borisov, who the demonstrators accuse of corruption and proximity to oligarchs. Again and again there were serious clashes with numerous injuries and arrests.
Borisov refuses to resign

Borisov has been in power almost continuously for almost ten years. He refuses to resign before the regular end of his term of office in March. On Wednesday, the EU Commission expressed concern about the legal situation, the lack of progress in the fight against corruption and threats against the independent media in Bulgaria.

Bulgaria is considered to be the EU country where corruption is most widespread. The country is comparatively poor. Few oligarchs control large parts of the economy.
