In the conflict with the yellow vests, the French government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux has accused radical supporters of the protest movement of wanting to overthrow the government. In France, however, „no one is above the law,“ warned Griveaux.

One of the Yellowweste’s spokesmen was released from police custody on Thursday. Éric Drouet is accused, according to the prosecutor, to have organized an unannounced demonstration.

Griveaux said after the first Cabinet meeting of the new year in Paris, the vast majority of yellow vests comply with the law. The movement has also become a matter of „Aufwieglern“. They wanted „an uprising and basically overthrow the government.“ In his view, they would attack the legitimacy of the government of head of state Emmanuel Macron.

Protests continue – but much weaker

Since mid-November, the yellow vests in France have repeatedly organized mass protests and blocked roads. There had been repeated violent riots in the capital, Paris.

The movement can not be assigned to any political camp, trade union or party. Originally it was directed against high gasoline prices. Eventually she became a protest movement against Macron’s policies. Three quarters of the French are now dissatisfied with the government of their president.

The protests had put Macron under extreme pressure. Last month, he and his middle-class government were quick to launch a billion-dollar package of social measures to defuse the conflict.

Meanwhile, the protests have subsided somewhat. This Saturday again want to follow the movement in several cities in the country on the streets, as media reported. By the end of December, however, the yellow-veined demonstrations had had significantly less popularity than before.
