The number of illegal border crossings between Mexico and the USA has continued to decline. The US Department of Homeland Security said yesterday (local time), in July compared to June, 26 percent fewer people were taken to the border. For the second time in a row, this is a decline of more than 20 percent compared to the previous month.

In particular, the number of migrants from Guatemala has recently shrunk considerably. From May to July, the number of families and unaccompanied children had also fallen by more than 50 percent. The development was mainly due to the migration agreement with Mexico, it said. US Secretary of Homeland Security Kevin McAleenan said that despite the progress, the situation at the border remains „beyond the crisis level“.

Hard course of Trump

The US administration of President Donald Trump has long been taking a hard line on migrants to curb illegal immigration across the Mexican border. At the beginning of June, the Mexican government pledged to crack down on illegal migration and prevent people from moving to the United States from their own country.

Meanwhile, US immigration officials arrested around 700 people in several raids in Mississippi State. The co-ordinated searches took place mainly on farms where work papers were reviewed on a large scale.
