Territorial waters: Japan accuses China of violation

Japan accuses China of another breach of its territorial waters in the East China Sea. Two Chinese Coast Guard boats entered the area today, the Japanese Coast Guard said. That was the 21st time this year and the first time since the end of August that Chinese ships had sailed into the waters that Japan claims for itself.

The Tokyo government accuses China of „reckless“ intrusion into the waters around a group of small islands in the East China Sea. However, both countries claim this area for themselves. In Japan it is called „Senkaku“, in China „Diaoyu“.

Two Chinese Coast Guard ships entered the waters around 10:45 a.m. local time on Sunday and approached a Japanese fishing boat, the Kyodo news agency reported. The Japanese coast guard sent patrol boats to the area. The Chinese Foreign Ministry initially did not respond to a Reuters request, and the Ministry of Defense could not be reached either.
