In the Gaza Strip, it has remained largely calm this morning after a ceasefire brokered by Egypt. The spokesman for the Palestinian extremist group Islamic Jihad, Musab al-Braim, said the ceasefire has been in effect since 4.30 am (CET). A representative of Egypt confirmed the agreement. However, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz rejoiced in jihad if the extremists again fired missiles at Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip. „Silence is answered with silence,“ said Katz in the army radio. But Israel will not hesitate to attack those who try to injure it – whether from the Gaza Strip or from any other place.
No comment from Netanyahu
Braim said Israel has agreed to the call to end the targeted killing of fighters and the shooting of protesters on the border with the Gaza Strip. This, however, contradicted Foreign Minister Katz. Israel has not changed its attitude here, there will continue to be targeted killings.
A spokesman for Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu initially refused to comment on reports of a ceasefire. Jonathan Conricus, a spokesman for the army, said: „We have been informed that there is a ceasefire, in my understanding Egypt was of the utmost importance in the negotiations.“
Once again jihadist leaders killed
In an Israeli air strike in the Gaza Strip, a member of the Islamic Jihad was killed with his family during the night, according to eyewitnesses and local media. In total, eight people were killed in Deir al-Balah.
These were Jihad military commander Rasmi Abu Malhus, two women and five minors, Palestinian media reported. The Ministry of Health in Gaza confirmed in the morning that two children had been recovered dead from rubble.
The worst mutual attacks in months had begun on Tuesday, when Israel killed Baha Abu al-Ata, a commander of the Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip.
