An initiative to make sex a criminal offense has more than forty thousand supporters. Among them are mainly young people, reports De Volkskrant.
The Christian-inspired and politically independent youth movement Exxpose is presenting the citizens‘ initiative to the Lower House this week. The movement hopes that the initiative forces the House to put the subject on the agenda.
It took Exxpose almost six years to get the forty thousand signatures. The movement started the petition in 2013 after the Netherlands was criticized for its prostitution policy in a documentary by the Arab news channel Al Jazeera.
Supporters of the initiative support Swedish prostitution policy. In the Scandinavian country, buying sex is punishable, and the government helps women to step out of prostitution. According to campaign leader Willemijn de Jong, this means that vulnerable women can no longer be bought by men with power and money.
