Around six months after the start of the coronavirus pandemic, according to US experts, there are already more than ten million confirmed infections and almost 500,000 deaths. This came out this morning (local time) from data from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
USA with 2.5 infected
The United States is currently the worst affected country. It has the most confirmed infections with 2.5 million and the most known deaths with more than 125,000 victims. Most recently, states in the south of the country such as Florida, Texas, Arizona and California reported highs in new infections.
Brazil followed in second place, where the pandemic had recently spread rapidly. There were 1.3 million known infections and around 57,000 deaths there, according to Johns Hopkins.
Regular updates
The Hopkins University website is updated regularly with incoming data and therefore usually shows a higher level than the official figures of the World Health Organization (WHO). In some cases, however, the numbers have recently been revised downwards. According to the WHO, there have been 9.82 million known infections and 495,000 deaths to date.
The coronavirus pandemic began around the turn of the year in the Chinese metropolis of Wuhan. The novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 can trigger the lung disease Covid-19, which can be fatal especially in older or immunocompromised patients.
