
During a heat wave in the US several temperature records were broken at the weekend. The National Meteorological Service said historic records were recorded at seven locations, including Atlantic City and New York JFK. Many measuring stations recorded temperatures between 38 and over 43 degrees Celsius. It should cool down today.
At least six dead
The heatwave in the US last weekend dragged from the Midwest to the Atlantic coast. On Saturday, there were heat warnings for areas where 157 million people live. On Sunday, about 95 million people were affected. According to media reports, at least six people died as a result of the heat.
New York set up 500 publicly accessible air-conditioned rooms (cooling centers). The New York City Triathlon, scheduled for yesterday, was canceled due to the heat – for the first time since its inception in 2001.
Heavy weather, danger of spring tides
The National Meteorological Service said the „dangerous heat wave“ will end today. Then, however, must be expected with heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. There is a danger of spring tides.
For the beginning of this week, meteorologists predict a new heat wave for parts of Europe with temperatures in excess of 40 degrees Celsius. In June, record temperatures had already been measured in many places.
