Brazilian ex-president Temer has to go back to prison. A professional court tipped the decision to release him. Temer is said to be involved in a far-reaching corruption scandal.
Former Brazilian President Michel Temer has returned to jail for his alleged involvement in a far-reaching corruption scandal. An appellate court in Rio de Janeiro ordered the re-imprisonment of the 78-year-old. The decision was „immediately final,“ said a court representative.
Temer was arrested in March in connection with the corruption affair „Lava Jato“ (car wash) to the state company Petrobras, which had already Temer’s predecessor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva jailed. He was held in custody for several days and then released at first instance on the orders of a judge. This decision overturned the appeals court.
Already during the term corruption allegations
The prosecution accuses Temer of being the head of a criminal organization involved in various crimes such as corruption, money laundering and fraud. Among other things, the group is said to have negotiated bribes in connection with the construction of a nuclear power plant. Temer, who served as president at the end of 2018 after two and a half years, was the least popular Brazilian leader. Even during his term corruption allegations against him had become loud.
