Heather Mills, Paul McCartney’s former wife, has claimed record compensation for a UK telephone tapping scandal. As a result of a class action lawsuit against the Newsgroup Newspapers (NGN) publishing group, along with other victims, she „achieved the highest compensation in a case of media libel ever imposed in British legal history,“ Mills said today following a high-profile hearing Court in London.
She did not name an amount. The NGN group belongs to the empire of media mogul Rupert Murdoch.
For years, journalists of the later-listed tabloid „News of the World“ had been listening to mobile phone conversations with thousands of crime victims and celebrities and bribing police officers. In addition to Mills also included actors, politicians, soldiers and employees of the British royal family.
By listening to phone calls between 1999 and 2010, „countless falsehoods“ have been spread, says Mills. A lawyer from the publishing group apologized in court to Mills and her sister Fiona, who were also to be compensated.
