For the fourth year in a row, Syria tops the list of the most dangerous countries for humanitarian aid workers, according to an analysis by CARE. 74 helpers have lost their lives since the beginning of the year, 20 of them in Syria alone. According to CARE, that is 30 percent more than in the same period of the previous year. It is followed by South Sudan, where 14 aid workers lost their lives, and Somalia with eleven dead.

According to the study, a total of 109 attacks on aid workers in 18 countries have been reported worldwide this year. While most deaths are reported in Syria, attacks on aid workers are the most common in South Sudan.

„Providing help is a dangerous undertaking in South Sudan, it always has been,“ said Andrea Barschdorf-Hager, managing director of CARE Austria, in a broadcast. „Humanitarian work there is regularly made more difficult by harassment, illegal arrests and crime.“
