Myanmar’s Prime Minister Aung San Suu Kyi has firmly rejected allegations of genocide against her country. The army defends the country against attacks by armed rebels, said the Nobel Peace Prize winner today in The Hague before the International Court of Justice. A verdict is expected in a few weeks.
The Gambia has filed a lawsuit against Myanmar accusing the country of genocide for violent acts by the military against the Muslim Rohingya minority. Suu Kyi called these charges „incomplete and misleading“.
„Internal armed conflict“
„We have an internal armed conflict in Myanmar,“ Suu Kyi told the UN High Court. In autumn 2016, rebels attacked police stations. As a result, the military reacted. There may have been attacks. The justice of Myanmar prosecute the guilty party.
Gambia refers to a report by UN investigators in the lawsuit against Myanmar. They blamed the military for Myanmar’s „ongoing genocide.“ Soldiers murdered thousands of people, raped women and children, razed villages to the ground, and burned people alive in their homes. More than 700,000 people had fled to neighboring Bangladesh.
