British supermarket giant Tesco is once again making thousands of jobs as part of its restructuring program. Measures in the UK and Ireland could affect „up to 9,000 colleagues“, but Tesco hopes to be able to use half of them elsewhere within the group, the company said yesterday.

Tesco is the UK’s largest supermarket chain with 300,000 employees in the Kingdom alone and 440,000 worldwide.

„Good progress“ on restructuring

Tesco’s restructuring process, which started four years ago, has already „made good progress,“ Tesco’s UK and Irish business director Jason Tarry said. However, the market environment remains fraught with challenges, and Tesco needs to make „adjustments“ over and over again to stay competitive. The supermarket giant is in addition to the Internet business, especially the competition from the German discounters Aldi and Lidl in the country to create.

The meat, fish and delicatessen counters in 90 Tesco stores, among other things, are now to be eliminated, as the company explained. At the bars in the other markets, the opening hours or the offer could be limited. Tesco is the third largest supermarket chain in the world after the French concern Carrefour and the US chain Walmart and also has a presence in China, India and Slovakia.
