The dialogue between the US and North Korea over nuclear disarmament on the Korean peninsula is to continue, even after the failure of the latest summit, according to North Korean state media. The North Korean state agency KCNA announced early this morning that both sides had agreed on an ongoing dialogue on „denuclearization“.

Shortly before, US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un broke off their talks in Hanoi prematurely and without agreement. KCNA reported that the talks were productive and honest. The exchange between Kim and Trump has contributed to mutual trust.

Contradictory statements about US sanctions

Previously, North Korea had contradicted US President Trump, who had said that no agreement had been reached, as the North Korean ruler had demanded the lifting of all sanctions. North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho said in a rare appearance to journalists that his country had only demanded the repeal of some sanctions in return for nuclear disarmament.

The offered nuclear disarmament is the far-reaching measure that is currently feasible for his country. The offer will not change even if the US proposes further negotiations in the future. Trump had said after the premature end of the summit yesterday that Kim’s offers for nuclear disarmament had not been far-reaching enough.
