„Spring Break“: curfew in Miami Beach

0

The city of Miami Beach has imposed a curfew in the face of numerous spring break celebrants. The authorities said it will apply for the next three days from 8 p.m. in the most important tourist areas of the city. Restaurants also have to close at 8 p.m. In addition, the three bridges to the mainland will be closed from 10 p.m. Only residents, commuters and hotel guests are allowed to use them.

In the past few days, students had come to Miami in the US state of Florida in droves to celebrate „Spring Break“ with wild parties despite the coronavirus pandemic. Miami has long been a popular destination for party-goers. This year, however, according to Mayor Dan Gelber, there were significantly more partiers than in previous years. „I think it’s partly because there are very few places in the country that are open,“ said Gelber.

Raul Aguila of the city administration justified the curfew with concerns about public safety. Looking at photos of huge crowds on Ocean Drive, he said, „It looked like a rock concert.“
