With the rejection of the draft budget, Spain’s minority government was at an end. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez therefore announces new elections for April 28th.

In Spain, a new parliament will be elected on April 28th. This was announced by Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. It will be the third parliamentary election in the country in less than four years.

On Wednesday, the Spanish parliament had rejected the draft budget of the minority government, triggering a government crisis. Sánchez and his social-democratic party PSOE do not have their own majority, but only about a quarter of the seats. The Government Chief, who has been in office since June 2018, relied on the left-wing populist party Podemos and on two-party parties from Catalonia. All three had denied their approval of the budget bill.
