The number of reported new infections with the coronavirus in South Korea has risen again significantly. 146 cases were found yesterday, the health authorities said today. The day before it had been 91. So far, 9,478 people in the country have tested positive for the SARS CoV-2 pathogen. The number of deaths related to the virus rose by five to 144.
The authorities attributed the increase to, among other things, a new local cluster of infection cases in Daegu, the city most affected by the outbreak, in the southeast. There, dozens of patients were infected in a hospital. „There is still an increased risk from such cluster infections,“ said Yoon Tae Ho from the Disaster Management Center.
For days, the authorities have also been concerned about the increase in “imported” cases of infection. Many South Koreans are returning for fear of infection in countries that are experiencing rapid spread of the virus. Stricter entry controls, including a virus check for those arriving from Europe and also for travelers from the USA, came into force.
In March, infection cases in South Korea had started a clear downward trend since the peak at the end of February, with over 900 cases of infection within one day.
