The Italian Minister of the Interior and leader of the right-wing populist Lega, Matteo Salvini, yesterday voiced increased doubts over the coalition’s troubling coalition with the populist Five-Star Movement.

„Something has broken down in recent months,“ Salvini said after a turbulent day for the coalition at a gig in the coastal town of Sabaudia, south of Rome.

Previously, a Senate debate on the planned high-speed road between the French Lyon and Turin (TAV) revealed the current mood in the government. The background was a request made by the five-star movement for a stop of the major project. The Lega, on the other hand, supports the EU-sponsored billions project, for which Giuseppe Conte, the non-party head of government, has recently spoken out.

„Fast solution“ announced

Salvini had warned on Monday that who said no to the TAV, put the government in danger, and had brought a new election into the game. After speculation about a possible break of the coalition has not been broken for months, is today speculated in Italian media again increasingly on a forthcoming upcoming new election.

There are votes for an election in October, it said about the news agency ANSA. Another option, according to observers, is a major government reshuffle in the area.

According to media reports, Salvini, and later also five-star boss Luigi Di Maio discussed the way forward with Conte last night. There are many indications that there could be further deliberations by the government today. Conte canceled a late-morning press conference and Salvini made an appointment in Abruzzo. „If there is a problem to solve, it will be resolved quickly,“ the Home Secretary told his supporters.
