In Nigeria, a singer has been sentenced to death for alleged blasphemy. „He sang a song insulting the Prophet Mohammed,“ said Ismaila Na Abba Afakallah, the executive secretary of the censorship agency in Kano state, yesterday. A court found him guilty and imposed the death penalty.

The 22-year-old reportedly spread the song on WhatsApp. What exactly he sang in the song is unclear. He can appeal the judgment.

Kano, in northern Nigeria, is one of the states that has Sharia law. Since the first such laws were introduced in Nigeria in 1999, several people have been sentenced to death, but only one has been executed. In the West African country, it is estimated that more than half of the citizens are Muslim and around 45 percent are Christian.
