At least three refugees drowned in a boat accident off the Greek island of Crete. The coast guard was able to save 53 people from the water, reported the Greek public broadcaster (ERT) today.

As an officer of the coast guard of the dpa said, the migrants‘ boat capsized because of the strong winds around twelve nautical miles (around 22 kilometers) off Crete. The rescue teams also looked for more people with helicopters. The exact number of people on board the boat was unknown.

Smugglers keep trying to bring migrants from the Turkish Aegean coast to Italy on a dangerous route, which in most cases runs south of Crete. There were eight winds in the region today.
