In the presidential election in the US next year, more and more Democrats want to play against the Republican incumbent Donald Trump. Senator Amy Klobuchar officially announced her candidacy for the Democrats in Minneapolis, Minn., On Sunday.
„It’s time for us to get our democracy back,“ she said on Sunday in heavy snow and nearly minus ten degrees Celsius from cheering supporters. The 58-year-old announced, among other things, in the case of her election victory to put a focus on climate change. „On the first day we will join the international climate protection agreement again.“
Trump had withdrawn the US, one of the largest polluters of greenhouse gases in the world, in 2017 from the Paris International Climate Change Agreement. Klobuchar announced in view of Trump’s style of government that she would not have a „foreign policy via tweet“.
Klobuchar presented himself as a down-to-earth representative of the people. She has neither a „political machine“ nor a lot of money, she said. „But what I have is this: I have cutting, I have family, I have friends, I have neighbors, I have all of you.“
Klobuchar had been elected in November in Minnesota by a large majority for a third term as Senator. She belongs to the moderate party wing. Due to her background and popularity in the Midwest she is credited with a strong showing in the formerly democratically dominated key states of Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. There, Trump had dominated in the 2016 election.
With Klobuchar so far ten Democrats have announced that they want to run for Trump. Half of them are women: Seniors Kamala Harris and Kirsten Gillibrand and Congressman Tulsi Gabbard are candidates. On Saturday, prominent Senator Elizabeth Warren said she wanted to pull the Democrats against Trump into the 2020 presidential election.
Other potential candidates include ex-vice-president Joe Biden and independent senator Bernie Sanders. The party-internal primaries start in early 2020 in Iowa. For the Republicans, only Trump has said he will be back in 2020.
