Scottish National Party (SNP) leader Nicola Sturgeon plans to seek the authority to hold another independence referendum in Scotland before Christmas. She will apply for this under Article 30 of the Autonomy Law, the Scottish Prime Minister said today.
According to the law, Scotland needs the permission of the British Government for a final referendum. The SNP therefore wants to request that the Scottish Regional Parliament, in which Sturgeon sits, be given the power to make such a referendum.
Majority was against Brexit
„This Article 30 request will be sent to Downing Street before Christmas – whoever will be there,“ said Sturgeon, referring to the British Prime Minister’s seat. On December 12, at the request of current Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson, a new British House of Commons is to be elected. He wants to lift the blockade in the Brexit process.
The majority of Scots want to stay in the EU, but Johnson wants to quickly enforce the withdrawal of the United Kingdom. Sturgeon therefore sees a chance of remaining in the EU in another referendum on the independence of Scotland from the United Kingdom.
In September 2014, the majority of the Scots had decided against independence. Two years later, in June 2016, the total population voted by a slim majority for the United Kingdom’s exit from the EU. The Scots, however, voted already at that time – like the Northern Irish – for their whereabouts in the EU. Since then, there has been repeated talk of a new independence referendum in Scotland, but it has always been rejected by Johnson’s predecessor Theresa May.
