The Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced another referendum on the independence of Scotland if her party wins the general election in early May. „There will be another independence referendum if the people of Scotland vote for another independence referendum,“ said Sturgeon yesterday in front of the regional parliament in Edinburgh.
The head of government survived a vote of no confidence in parliament yesterday. The opposition accused her of having „deceived“ parliament in the affair surrounding the abuse allegations against her predecessor Alex Salmond.
Waiting for May
Sturgeon’s Scottish National Party (SNP) hopes to win the general election on May 6th. The head of government is aiming for Scotland to be able to rejoin the EU after a new referendum and an exit from the United Kingdom. On Monday, the SNP introduced a new draft law in Parliament in Edinburgh, aimed at a referendum by the end of 2023. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson strictly rejects another referendum.
In the first referendum in 2014, the majority of the Scots were against separating from London. In the 2016 Brexit vote, the Scots, unlike the majority of the British, voted against leaving the EU. After that, the independence movement gained momentum again.
