Saudi Arabia, one of the largest oil producers in the world, has presented a climate protection plan for the coming years. According to the official news agency SPA, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced yesterday in Riyadh that the “green Saudi Arabian initiative” provides, among other things, that his country will cover half of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2030.
In addition, Saudi Arabia plans to plant ten billion trees on its territory over the next ten years. As part of the “Middle East Green Initiative”, an additional 40 billion trees are being planted in cooperation with other Arab countries.

„The kingdom, the region and the whole world must go further and act faster in their fight against climate change,“ declared Crown Prince Mohammed. “We reject the wrong choice between preserving the economy and protecting the environment.” The communication did not provide any information on the specific implementation of the climate protection plan, such as how so many trees should be planted and preserved in Saudi Arabia’s arid desert areas .
The climate protection project is part of the “Vision 2030” investment program, with which Saudi Arabia, which is heavily dependent on oil exports, wants to broaden its economy. In international negotiations, for example at the UN climate conferences, Saudi Arabia has repeatedly acted as a brake on more ambitious goals in the fight against global warming.
